Active Duty Military
- If you are active duty and a non-resident of North Carolina, you may be exempt from NC motor vehicle property tax.
- To qualify, provide your Leave & Earnings Statement (LES) for the month and year you register the vehicle.
- The LES must show:
- Estimated Time of Separation (ETS) date
- Home of record outside North Carolina
- The LES must show:
Military Spouses
- Spouses may also qualify if their home of record matches the service member’s.
- Required documents:
- Copy of military ID card
- Copy of out-of-state driver’s license, voter registration card, or most recent state tax return
Important Notes
- Exemption does not apply to leased vehicles. If the vehicle is owned by a leasing company and leased to military personnel, taxes must be paid.
- You must submit documentation to your county tax office to apply for the exemption.
