Owners may request a refund of vehicle property taxes if the motor vehicle is sold, the license plate is surrendered, or it is registered in another state.
- Refunds are based on full calendar months remaining in the registration period after the license plate is surrendered to the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.
- The refund applies to the vehicle property tax portion tied to the registration period.
- Municipal vehicle fee taxes assessed under N.C. General Statute 20-97 are not refundable.
Request a refund within one year of plate surrender; submit the following to the county tax office:
- Proof of plate surrender (DMV Form FS20)
- Bill of Sale or new state registration
