Personal Property - What is considered personal property?
Most everyone knows about yearly real property taxes on land, homes, and buildings. But in North Carolina, state law also calls for taxes on individual personal property.
Individual Personal Property includes:
• Boats and Motors: This includes boats, boat motors, jet skis, and other watercraft.
• Mobile Homes
• Aircraft: This includes hot air balloons, ultralights, and gliders.
• Vehicles with Permanent Multi-Year Tags issued by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV).
• Unlicensed Motor Vehicles: Vehicles without an active North Carolina registration on January 1, including cars, trucks, trailers, campers, and motorcycles.
Note: Property tax for registered motor vehicles is collected through the Tag & Tax Together program. If you have questions about vehicles with an active North Carolina registration, please call 919-715-7000 or contact NC DMV.
